When a utility reviews non-revenue water, the first question is often where the losses occur. The answer frequently begins at the meter: an undersized model, a meter installed against a bend, or a measurement principle that does not match the flow profile. For overseas buyers and distributors, the safest procurement strategy is not to compare catalog pages in isolation, but to match meter technology to the pipeline, the water, and the reading system.
Guangzhou Basic Intelligence Technology Co., Ltd., known as Basic Controls, has supplied smart utility metering since 1998. Its water meter range covers large-diameter ultrasonic meters, multi-jet wet-type meters, and horizontal and vertical Woltmann meters. Each family solves a different problem. The following technical brief explains where each fits, what specifications matter, and how to avoid the installation errors that cause most field complaints.
Start with flow range and installation, not the data sheet headline
Every water meter is a compromise between low-flow sensitivity, high-flow capacity, pressure loss, and cost. The key ratio is Q3/Q1. A higher ratio means the meter can resolve smaller flows without sacrificing maximum capacity. Ultrasonic models from Basic Controls offer range ratios of 125, 160, 200, 250, or 400 depending on configuration. The multi-jet LXS series is rated R100, the horizontal Woltmann LXLG series R50, and the vertical Woltmann WS series R200. Buyers should compare these ratios with the actual demand profile: a residential block with many small draws has different needs from a bulk transfer main that runs near peak flow for hours.
Installation sensitivity matters just as much. Ultrasonic meters are listed at U5/D3, while the mechanical ranges are listed at U10/D5. These figures describe how much upstream and downstream disturbance the meter can tolerate. They are not marketing labels; they determine whether a meter will hold accuracy after a valve, a bend, or a reducer. The manuals specify straight-pipe distances and orientation for a reason. A meter that is correct on paper can still fail if the pipe is not flushed, if air is trapped, or if the electronics housing is rotated to the side on a horizontal run.
Large-diameter ultrasonic water meters for bulk and district measurement
The large-diameter ultrasonic range covers DN50 to DN300, with common flow values from 25 m3/h at DN50 to 1,000 m3/h at DN300. The meter measures flow from the difference in transit time between upstream and downstream ultrasonic signals. Its practical advantage is a clean bore: there are no moving parts in the water path, so pressure loss is low and wear is limited.
Dual-channel measurement is the defining feature. If one channel is blocked by debris or behaves abnormally, the meter can continue to measure on the remaining channel. This redundancy is valuable in chambers and plant rooms where a missed reading is expensive. The meter also provides self-diagnosis for flow sensor faults, temperature sensor open or short circuits, over-range conditions, and low battery. Fault codes are stored with the date of occurrence, which helps maintenance teams distinguish a transient event from a persistent fault.
The specification list is class 2 accuracy, T30 temperature grade, MAP16 pressure level, Delta p40 pressure loss, IP68 protection, and E1 electromagnetic environment. The display is a 9-digit wide-temperature LCD. A built-in lithium battery is rated for more than six plus one years. A photoelectric interface supports handheld infrared reading. Communication options include M-BUS, RS485, LoRa, and built-in 4G or NB-IoT modules. An optional pressure monitoring function covers 0 to 1.6 MPa with 0.01 MPa resolution. Reverse flow can be counted, and the information menu retains frozen flow data for 24 months.
Multi-jet wet-type meters for residential and light commercial service
The LXS multi-jet wet-type meter covers DN15 to DN65 with Q3 values from 2.5 to 40 m3/h. Water enters through multiple jets and strikes the rotor, keeping the flow distribution even and improving low-flow performance. Because the measuring mechanism is in direct contact with water, the design is simple, durable, and cost-effective for clean water service.
Accuracy class 2 and R100 range ratio make this family suitable for apartment buildings, offices, and small commercial connections where both small draws and occasional high demand occur. The meter is available in threaded and flanged versions. Temperature options include T30, T50, and T90 for hot water, with a working pressure of 1.0 MPa. The maximum permissible error is plus or minus 5 percent in the lower flow range and plus or minus 2 percent in the upper range. For distributors, the value is in a familiar mechanical platform with predictable spare parts and straightforward reading.
Woltmann meters for high-flow mains and variable demand
The horizontal Woltmann LXLG series is a dry-type detachable meter for DN50 to DN300, with Q3 from 25 to 1,000 m3/h and an R50 ratio. The measuring mechanism is isolated from the water, and a magnetic coupling transfers rotor motion to the counter. This reduces fouling and allows maintenance without removing the entire pipeline. It is a practical choice for industrial, commercial, and municipal distribution mains where high flow is the normal condition.
The vertical Woltmann WS series covers DN50 to DN200 with Q3 from 25 to 400 m3/h and a higher R200 ratio. It combines a vertical helix rotor with full-flow detection and a low-inlet, high-outlet layout. The result is strong low-flow accuracy in systems with wide demand swings. A built-in stainless steel filter protects the measuring chamber, and the metering mechanism can be removed for service without dismantling the whole unit. The counting mechanism is independently sealed, so dial readings are not affected by water quality. The series is listed at 1.0 MPa or 1.6 MPa working pressure and complies with GB/T 778.1.
Communication choices should follow the utility model
A meter is only as useful as the data it delivers. Basic Controls offers several paths. M-BUS and RS485 suit wired building or chamber installations. LoRa supports local wireless collection. Built-in 4G or NB-IoT modules create an IoT meter for direct network connection. The photoelectric interface allows on-site reading without opening the enclosure. For utilities that already have mechanical meters in service, the company also supplies 4G water meter camera modules and 4G gas meter camera modules, allowing a staged move toward remote reading.
Buyers should define the reading architecture before ordering: local handheld, walk-by, fixed network, or direct cellular. They should also confirm power. The default is a built-in battery. External DC 7.5 to 24 V supply is available when RS485 is configured and must be specified at order. The wrong choice creates avoidable installation work later.
Installation quality protects the measurement
Most accuracy complaints trace back to installation. The manuals are explicit: flush the pipeline before fitting the meter; do not install at a high point where air collects; keep the electronics upward on horizontal runs; use a straight pipe of at least five diameters upstream and three downstream on bends; keep at least five diameters between the meter and a valve; and install a filter of the correct size at the inlet. On vertical runs, flow must move upward. On U-shaped pipework, the meter belongs at the lowest point. Do not force flange bolts to close an angular gap. These are not optional refinements. They are the difference between a stable reading and a service call.
For mechanical meters, the same discipline applies. Keep the meter full of water, open inlet and outlet valves fully, protect against freezing and direct sun, and use a filter and straight-pipe sections. A check valve at the inlet helps where downstream pressure can exceed inlet pressure. Periodic verification should follow local rules. The lead seal must remain intact; breaking it ends the manufacturer's quality and accuracy responsibility.
Why Basic Controls is a practical supply partner
Basic Controls has operated since 1998 and holds more than 80 patents and software copyrights. It has participated in drafting national and international metrological standards. Recognition includes the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Cooling and Heat Measurement Energy Conservation in 2015, EU MID certification, and the Guangdong Provincial Famous Brand Product title in 2018. The product portfolio extends beyond water meters to high-precision heat meters, flow meters, and integrated management systems for smart water, smart gas, building energy management, and smart heating.
For distributors, that breadth matters. A single project may need a large ultrasonic meter for a bulk main, multi-jet meters for tenant connections, and Woltmann meters for plant rooms. Sourcing from one engineering-focused manufacturer simplifies documentation, spare parts, and technical communication. The manuals cover dimensions, wiring, fault codes, maintenance, transport, and storage, so local teams can plan installation and service without guesswork.
Next step for overseas buyers
Before requesting a quotation, prepare the pipe size, expected flow range, water temperature, pressure, installation orientation, communication method, and power preference. That information is enough to narrow the range and avoid over-specifying a meter that will never see the required flow. Basic Controls can then match the configuration to the project rather than the other way around.
